Laurel Elementary is a School of Arts and Technology with about 450 students. In Being a School of Arts and Technology, all classes outside of art need to have some arts and technology component in their units. Their mission statement is: “Laurel Elementary School exists to educate the whole child through the infusion of the arts and technology across the curriculum. This provides a culturally rich learning environment where differences are supported and celebrated.” They have a school wide rule code called ROAR:
Own my behavior
They have 61% free and reduced lunch, and about 51% white students, 39% hispanic students and 10% other.
Ms. Tenpenny, my Cooperating Teacher, runs an Art Club in the Fall and the Spring offered to 4th and 5th graders where young artists can focus more on artmaking
In the art room we see every class once a week, and then we see a grouping of students from each grade on Mondays as they are “Creativity” days where students work on Stop Motion Animation. Every trimester a new grouping of students from each grade come to the art room for creativity. We see every students at least once a week.
I have two duties during the week. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I have car duty in the morning and every day I have bus duty at the end of the school day. There is Staff meetings before school every 2 weeks on Thursday mornings, and a Arts & Tech meeting once a month to discuss arts and technology integration.
Encore teachers also took on the responsibility to direct, cast etc for the Thanksgiving Play for 5th grade every Fall.
