Highland has approx. 248 students for grades 9-12, and about 50% female, 50% male. White students make up about 63% of the student body, while Hispanic students make up 35% and 2% other. It is 29% Free lunch, 8% Reduced-price lunch (https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/colorado/districts/weld-county-school-district-no-re-9/highland-high-school-3975).
School starts each day at 8:07am and lets out 3:27pm. I have 6 periods of general art classes (including introductory, advanced and pottery students). Students are required to have at least 1 specials class; this includes art, drama, music, weightlifting, agriculture, etc. Each period of art meets 4 times a week, with 1 block period (which is double the length of the normal 47 minute period).
My duties include bus duty every Tuesday morning where I have to make sure the students get in the building safely. Faculty meetings happen every other week before classes (7:30-8am) to discuss progress or changes within the school.
Also I am missing parent/teacher conferences because I will be in my next placement so I am leaving a few copies of my brochure (find this on my advocacy tab) with my Cooperating teacher to hand out if necessary.
Also, I will have duties relating to Homecoming week. It is a large event within the Ault community. They have a parade with handmade floats from students and various community building exercises, like painting shop windows on the main street. There is also many sports activities and a dance.
Highland High school is very proud of their sports teams and most of the school participates in some after school activity, whether it be band, football, volleyball, team management, etc.
